The AISI 304L steel is stainless steel, in order to achieve its excellent mechanical properties and resistance to corrosion, it requires a rigid control about its microstructure, especially on two aspects: ferrite / austenite ratio and precipitation of deleterious phases. The metallurgical transformations that occur during the welding thermal cycle can modify these aspects and, consequently, cause serious degradation of the properties of these materials. Finding to contribute to the investigation of suitable parameters for the welding of these steels, the present study has to evaluate the influence of the external magnetic field on such transformations through the evaluation of the final microstructural weld joints. For this, two plates of the AISI 304L steel were welded through the TIG process, where a welding had the presence of external magnetic field and a weld without the presence of the external magnetic field. After welding, the microstructure of the joints was characterized by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy and the results showed that the presence of the external magnetic field produced a plasma arc and a narrow and elongated fusion well, a decrease in HAZ, refined FZ microstructure and with thermal imaging, via the FLIR machine, one can observe the format of the plasma arc, size the arc and the melting pool and compare the temperature with that of the thermocouple. Has observed that the welding with the external magnetic field had a lower HAZ, grain refinement and narrow and deep weld pool
