ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECT OF ALKALINE TREATMENT OF CURAUA FIBER ON THE IZOD IMPACT RESISTANCE OF POLIESTER MATRIX COMPOSITES

Resumo

Analisou-se a resistência ao impacto de compósitos com matriz poliéster, reforçada com até 30% em volume de fibras contínuas e alinhadas de curauá com tratamento de mercerização. Ensaio de impacto Izod foi realizado em corpos de prova padrão obtidos por prensagem à temperatura ambiente, após 24 horas de cura da matriz poliéster. Os resultados mostraram um significativo aumento da energia de impacto com a fração incorporada de fibra de curauá. A superfície de fratura foi analisada por microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Acima de 20% de fibra, os compositos sofreram somente ruptura parcial devido à natureza das trincas que tendem a se propagar na interface entre a fibra e a matriz sem o rompimento das fibras e, conseqüentemente, total separação do corpo de prova.

 

The impact resistance of polyester matrix composites, reinforced with up to 30% in volume of continuous and aligned curaua fibers that have been alkaline treated by mercerization, was analyzed. Izod impact tests were performed on standard specimens press-molded at room temperature after 24 hours od cure of the polyester matrix. The results showed a significant increase in the impact energy with the fraction of incorporated curaua fiber. The fracture surface was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. It was also found that above 20% of fibers, the specimens suffered partial rupture owing to the nature of the cracks that tend to propagate at the interface between the fiber and the matrix without breaking the fibers and, consequently, with total separation of the specimen.
