Metallic armors are widely used in battle cars because of their low cost compared to other types of armors, namely, polymeric, ceramic and composite, and properties obtained by quenching and tempering heat treatments such as hardness and tenacity. These properties, antagonistic to steel, allow the tip of the projectile to be broken (hardness) and the impact energy to be absorbed (toughness). One of the factors that are of great importance for the shielding is the microstructure, with the martensite being considered ideal. Thus, this work had the objective of analyzing metallographically, with the aid of the modified Behara reagent and the ImageJ software, high hardness armor steel that passed through the tempering heat treatment at the following temperatures: 310 ° C1h, 425 ° C and 610 ° C, for 1 hour. The presence of fresh martensite and low percentages of ferrite were observed. The results showed that the percentage of ferrite was increasing, according to the increase of the tempering temperature
