In mineral processing, grinding circuit is the last stage of the ore comminution step responsible for particle reduction to the release of the mineral to be concentrated in the subsequent processes. A problem present in this process is the excessive milling of the material, which increases the power consumed in the milling, hinders the recovery of the very small particles in the concentration steps and impairs the filtration operation of the pelletizing process by clogging caused by the thinner material of the than specified. To improve griding circuit performance and reduce its operational cost, it is necessary to study adequate control strategies to improve control the various variables existing in this process. In this sense, the objective of this work was to use a grinding circuit simulator to compare the performance of the plant being controlled by classical control (PID), which is widely used in grinding circuits, and by model predictive control (MPC), which is applied in a layer above the PIDs. It was possible to conclude that the grinding circuit being controlled by MPC obtains better performance than the PID, allowing to work with the variables closer to their optimal limits of operation.
