Resumo

Os estudos buscando a remoção de íons de metais presentes em soluções aquosas através da biossorção têm um papel importante no controle de poluição de águas residuárias. Metais não ferrosos como cádmio, cromo (III), cromo (VI), zinco, níquel e arsênico são perigosos ao ecossistema aquático e apresentam risco à saúde humana já que podem se acumular ao longo da cadeia alimentícia afetando os seres humanos. Os métodos convencionais por remover estes elementos de soluções aquosas incluem a precipitação química, a troca iônica, a adsorção e processos de separação com membranas. A biossorção vem sendo considerada como um processo alternativo, onde os metais são removidos por sorção e/ou complexação a materiais biológicos, biomassas. Diferentes tipos de biomassas vêm sendo investigados, dentre elas podemos citar as diferentes espécies de microrganismos tais como as bactérias e fungos (vivos ou mortos), algas e subprodutos agrícolas (casca de cereais). No presente trabalho são apresentados os resultados referentes a estudos de biossorção empregando o pó da casca de coco verde como biossorvente na remoção de diferentes metais não ferrosos (As V, Cr III, Cr VI e Cd). A capacidade de remoção foi avaliada em ensaios de batelada, sendo estudadas a influência do pH, do tamanho de partícula e da concentração inicial dos íons metálicos. Os resultados obtidos foram avaliados utilizando as isotermas de Langmuir e Freundlich.

 

Studies about metal ions removal in aqueous solutions through biosorption have an important role in controlling pollution from wastewater. Non-ferrous metals such as cadmium, chromium (III), chromium (VI), zinc, nickel and arsenic are hazardous to the aquatic ecosystem and present risk to human health because it can accumulate along the food chain affecting humans. Conventional methods to remove these elements from aqueous solutions include chemical precipitation, the ion exchange, adsorption and separation processes with membranes. The biosorption is being considered as an alternative process, where the metals are removed by sorption and/or complexation by organic materials, biomass. Different types of biomass have been investigated; among them can be found different species of microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi (living or dead), algae and agricultural by-products (hulls, cereal). This work presents the results for studies of biosorption using coconut shell powder as biosorbent for the removal of various non-ferrous metals (As V, Cr III, Cr VI, Cd). The capacity of removal was evaluated in batch tests, and studied the influence of pH, particle size, and initial concentration of metal ions. The results were evaluated using the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms.
