One of the main components of the fuel cell PEM is called MEA (Membrane Electrode Assembly) and is composed of a proton exchange membrane and gas diffusion layers (CDG) which must be highly conductive, porous and hydrophobic. The CDGs with high hydrophobicity are generally prepared with coatings based on PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) on the surface of the substrate (fiber reinforced polymer / carbon paper). However, some studies have shown that the performance of CDG's tends to decrease with increasing PTFE. This paper presents a study on the mechanical behavior and the influence of two different surface treatments applied in gas diffusion layers produced the basis of short fibers of carbon and polyurethane resin. The conventional treatment was performed by dip coating process with immersion of CDG at a known rate, into a 10% suspension of PTFE in water. The treatment proposed consists of the second surface modification assisted by UV light with λ = 254 nm in the presence of hydrophobic agent TMPSi for 120 minutes followed by post-heat treatment at 80 ° C. The samples were characterized by electrical conductivity, tensile testing, thermal analysis and measures of wettability. From the results obtained it was possible to observe the influence of surface treatment on the mechanical properties and characteristics of the gas diffusion layers produced based carbon short fibers and polyurethane polymeric resin.
