In this work, the impact of wear caused during the wear simulation test (according to ISO 14242-1 Standard) on the microstructure of stainless steel femoral heads articulating against ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) was evaluated. The worn femoral head (WFH) was initially cut (transversal and sagittal), grinded (#180, #360, #600, #1,200 e #1,500) and finally polished. The chemical composition of the femoral head was qualitatively characterized by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), aiming to determine the chemical elements according to the specified in the ISO 5832-1 Standard. The metallographic observation (austenitic grain, grain size and presence of delta ferrite), according to ISO 5832-1 Standard, was performed by the use of a scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy (OM). The crystallographic information of the femoral head was obtained by Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD), coupled to SEM. The type of inclusions, according to the ISO 4967 Standard, was determined by MO. The mapping analysis by EDS coupled to SEM was used as auxiliary technique to the identification of inclusions. Once the hardness affects the wear of the femoral heads, it was evaluated according to the ISO 6507-1 Standard.
