Resumo

A heterogeneidade nas dimensões e nas propriedades das fibras de curauá, como em todas as fibras lignocelulósicas, constitui-se em uma limitação para sua aplicação em compósitos. Assim, o presente trabalho avaliou a resistência mecânicas da fibra de curauá, utilizando a análise estatística de Weibull, em função do diâmetro da fibra. Através de uma distribuição dimensional identificou-se nove intervalos de diâmetro. Vinte fibras de curauá foram então selecionadas para cada intervalo, medindo-se o diâmetro em um projetor de perfil. Ensaios de tração foram conduzidos em cada fibra e a resistência máxima foi correlacionada com o intervalo de diâmetro. Os resultados mostram uma sensível variação na resistência com o diâmetro da fibra. Por meio de observações por microscopia eletrônica de varredura da superfície de fratura, procurou-se identificar o mecanismo responsável por esta variação.

 

The heterogeneous dimensions and the non-uniform properties that are common characteristics of a lignocellulosic fiber, represent a limitation for using curaua fiber in composites. Therefore, in this work the mechanical properties of curauá fibers were evaluated, in terms of a Weibull analysis, as a function of the fibers diameter. By means of a dimensional statistic, nine diameter intervals were initially identified. Then, twenty fibers were selected for each interval by precise diameter measurement in a profile projector. Tensile tests were conducted for each fiber and the ultimate strength was correlated with the diameter interval. The results showed a significant variation of the strength with the fiber’s diameter. Through scanning electron microscopy observation of the fiber fracture surface, an attempt was made to identify the mechanism responsible for the strength variation with the diameter.
