Resumo

O ângulo de contato é um parâmetro considerado importante na avaliação do grau de hidrofobicidade de uma superfície mineral. Várias técnicas que podem ser empregadas para se medir este ângulo sendo a escolha da técnica dependente do tamanho e da forma do sólido. O método da ascensão capilar tem sido utilizado com sucesso na determinação do ângulo de contato em sólidos pulverizados. O objetivo deste trabalho é determinar o ângulo de contato de partículas de hematita por meio da ascensão capilar considerando-se a equação de Washburn. Os testes foram realizados utilizando-se uma montagem, especialmente desenvolvida, que inclui: uma balança analítica interligada a um microcomputador, uma célula cilíndrica e um sistema de elevação. Os resultados indicaram: a) a possibilidade da utilização da equação Washburn para a amostra de hematita em presença dos líquidos utilizados; b) o valor do fator geométrico obtido, experimentalmente, foi 1,03mm . Este valor está em boa concordância com aquele determinado por equação matemática (1,06mm5); c) o ângulo de contato determinado para água foi de 45,5°; d) a tensão -1 superficial crítica determinada para a hematita foi de 30,6mNm .

 

The contact angle is a parameter considered important for the assessment of the degree of hydrophobicity of a mineral surface. Several techniques can be used to measure this angle and the choice of the technique depends on the size and the shape of the solid. The capillary rise method has been used successfully in the determination of the angle of contact in mineral powders. The objective of this work is to determine the contact angle of hematite particles by means of the capillary rise considering the Washburn’s equation. The tests were carried out using an apparatus, especially developed, that includes: one scale linked to a microcomputer, a cylindrical cell, and a rising system. The results indicated: a) the possibility of the use of the Washburn equation for the hematite sample in presence of the utilized liquids; b) the value of geometric factor, experimentally obtained, was 1,03mm . This value is in good agreement to that determined by means of mathematical equation (1,06mm5); c) the angle of contact determined for water was of 45,5°; d) the -1 determined critical superficial tension for hematite was 30,6mNm .
