Resumo

BIOMASS WAS THE FIRST MATERIAL USED AS A FUEL BY HUMANITY, BEING REPLACED BY FOSSIL FUELS FOR ALL AFTER THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION. THE GROWING DISCOURSE ON GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT AND THE EFFECTS OF CO2 EMISSIONS, BIOMASS IS GAINING STRENGTH AS A POTENTIAL ALTERNATIVE TO FOSSIL FUELS, ESPECIALLY FOR STEELMAKING THAT ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ABOUT 5-10% OF ALL CO2 EMITTED. IT IS KNOWN THAT BIOMASS, COMPARED TO FOSSIL FUELS, HAVE A HIGHER VOLATILE CONTENT, HIGH MOISTURE AND LOWER CALORIFIC VALUE. ON THE OTHER HAND, IT HAS HIGHER HYDROGEN CONTENT AND LESS SULFUR CONTENT (IMPORTANT FOR STEELMAKING), IN ADDITION TO BEING CONSIDERED NEUTRAL IN CO2 EMISSIONS. TORREFACTION, HEATING BIOMASS AT TEMPERATURES BETWEEN 200-280 °C WITHOUT OXYGEN, IS A TREATMENT THAT CAN BE INTERESTING TO ADAPT THE BIOMASS FOR USE IN THE STEELMAKING PROCESSES, WHETHER IN THE COKE OVEN, IN THE BLAST FURNACE OR ANOTHER PROCESS THAT USES FOSSIL FUELS. THEREFORE, IN THIS ARTICLE TORREFACTION AND ITS EFFECT ON THE BIOMASS PROPERTIES SUCH AS GRINDABILITY, FIXED CARBON, CALORIFIC VALUE AND OTHER PROPERTIES RELEVANT TO STEEL PROCESSES WILL BE PRESENTED, SUCH AS THE FEASIBILITY OF USING TORREFIED BIOMASS IN STEELMAKING.
