COMPARING THE THERMAL, DYNAMICAL AND MECHANICAL PERFORMANCE OF COMMERCIALLY PURE ULTRA-HIGH MOLECULAR WEIGHT POLYETHYLENE AND POLYTETRAFLUORETHYLENE

Resumo

Comparou-se o comportamento térmico, dinâmico e mecânico dos polímeros termoplásticos polietileno de ultra-alto peso molecular (PEUAPM) e politetrafluoretileno (PTFE). Análises térmicas revelaram a maior estabilidade do PTFE frente ao PEUAPM. Entretanto, a resistência à tração e ao desgaste abrasivo do PEUAPM foi substancialmente superior à do PTFE. Concluiu-se que, para temperaturas entre 25 e 50°C, o PEUAPM é a opção mais adequada, enquanto que, dos 50 aos 100°C, o PTFE é o polímero mais indicado. Além da determinação das condições apropriadas de aplicação destes materiais potencialmente concorrentes, valores de referência foram obtidos para orientar o desenvolvimento e a caracterização de compósitos com base nestas matrizes poliméricas.

 

The thermal, dynamical and mechanical behaviour of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) thermoplastic polymers has been compared. Thermal analyses revealed the higher stability of PTFE before the UHMWPE. However, tensile and wear strengths of UHMWPE were substantially higher than PTFE. It has been concluded that for the temperature range of 25-50°C, the UHMWPE is the best choice, whereas from 50 to 100°C, the PTFE is preferred. Besides the determination of proper conditions for application of these potentially concurrent materials, some reference values have been obtained which can give directions to the development and the characterization of composites relying on these polymer matrices.
