The influence of the thermal cycle and austempering treatment on the mechanical behavior of a steel 0,6%C-1,5%Si-0,8%Mn-0.77% Cr had been investigated. The thermal cycle consisted in heating the steel in the intercritical region at 800°C and in the austenitic region at 900°C, fast cooling down to 600 or 400°C, followed by austempering in these temperatures for 300 s. After austempering, the materials were cooled with different rates and then submitted to tension testing. The total elongation of 15-20% and tensile strength of 1300-1400 MPa were reached. The austenite transformation to martensite during the plastic deformation (TRIP effect) is responsible for this combination of high resistance and ductility. The silicon helps to stabilize the austenite during austempering. However, the stabilized austenite can be transformed and the microstructure modified, which results in one ferrite, bainite and MA constituent.
