INTERGRANULAR CORROSION OF C-22 NICKEL-BASE ALLOY

Resumo

Um equipamento fabricado em liga de níquel (tipo C 22)(1) fundido apresentou descontinuidades com aparência de trincas. Exames da morfologia dessas descontinuidades e da estrutura metalográfica do material revelaram não se tratar de trincas, mas de corrosão intergranular, típica de sensitização, apesar do material apresentar um máximo de 0,02 % de Carbono. Exames através de microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e exames por espectroscopia por energia dispersiva (EDS) revelaram que a corrosão intergranular foi favorecida pela precipitação de intermetálicos ricos em molibdênio, cromo e tungstênio. Este trabalho apresenta os resultados da investigação e discute os mecanismos possíveis de corrosão intergranular nesse material bem como as possíveis medidas para evitar a falha.

 

An equipment cast on nickel-base alloy (type C 22) presented discontinuities with the appearance of cracks. Examination of the morphology of these discontinuities and of the metallographic structure of the material revealed that the discontinuities were not mechanical cracks, but intergranular corrosion, typical of sensitization, in spite of the material presenting a maximum of 0,02% Carbon. Examination using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) revealed that the cause of the intergranular corrosion was the formation of a molybdenum, chromium, and tungsten-rich intermetallic phase. This work presents the results of the investigation and discusses the possible mechanisms of intergranular corrosion in the nickel-base alloy as well as the possible solution to avoid the failure.
