The development of polymer matrix composite materials (PMCs) reinforced with natural fibers joins the idea of sustainability and enhances the production of environmentally correct materials. In structural applications, when a high strength-to-weight ratio is critical to the design, PMCs have been successfully replacing many conventional materials. Currently, synthetic fiber fabrics have preference for the intermediate layer in multilayered armor system (MAS). However, composites reinforced with fique fibers have been studied as second layer in MAS due to their low density and low cost. In the present work the ballistic behavior of epoxy composites fabricated with fique fabric subjected to impact with 7.62 mm ammunition was studied. In such a way that composites with 15, 30, 40 and 50% vol. of fabric were produced and tested as stand-alone system to evaluate the energy absorbed by the armor, comparing the results with samples of KevlarTM laminates using the Weibull distribution for statistical analysis. Among the materials tested, composites with 50% of fabric were found to be the best substitution alternative to KevlarTM.
