Sedimentation is a unit operation of separation between solids and liquid, performed in tanks called thickeners, that is based on the action of gravitational field on the particles in order to remove them from water. Its efficiency is extremely dependent on particle size, considering that the sedimentation rate is directly proportional to their sizes. Because of this, in thickening of slimes, it’s necessary to employ coagulation and flocculation process, which make use of chemical reagents in order to bring them together, forming larger aggregates which have higher sedimentation rates. In this context, it was performed this work with the proposal to investigate the impact of dosage of coagulant and flocculant on sedimentation of a sample of iron ore slime. For this objective, it was used a Factorial Design to design a set of sedimentation tests, which it was performed with different doses of these reagents. The response variables that were monitored during tests were: the unit area of sedimentation, turbidity of the supernatant liquid and the solid percentage of sediments. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the smaller unit area values of thickness were obtained at higher doses of coagulant and flocculant, whereas the abrupt elevation of the amount of such reagents added to the slurry, especially flocculant, caused an increase in turbidity of the supernatant liquid and a reduction in the degree of thickening of the thickened pulp.
