Resumo

Investigou-se o efeito que a micromorfologia da fibra de curauá (Ananas erectifolius), constituída de um feixe natural de filamentos paralelos, exerce sobre as propriedades mecânicas de compósitos de matriz poliéster incorporada com fibras de curauá como reforço contínuo e alinhado. Compósitos com diferentes quantidades de fibras de curauá foram ensaiados em flexão e tiveram sua fratura caracterizada por microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Resultados experimentais foram interpretados por meio de simulação da resposta mecânica do compósito, tendo em vista um modelo geométrico para a concentração de tensões gerada pela configuração da fibra de curauá como um conjunto de cilindros paralelamente encaixados.

 

The effect that the micromorphology of a curauá (Ananas erectifolius) fiber, which is composed of a natural bundle of parallel filaments, exerts on the mechanical properties of polyester matrix composites incorporated with curauá fibers as continuous and aligned reinforcement, was investigated. Composites with different amounts of curauá fibers were bend-tested and the fracture was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The experimental results were interpreted by means of a simulation of the composite mechanical response based on a geometrical model for the stress concentration associated with the curauá fiber configuration as a set of close packed parallel cylinders.
