MODIFICATIONS IN THE USIMINAS’S SLAB REHEATING FURNACE TO ENABLE OPERATING WITH NATURAL GAS

Resumo

Since the blast furnace of Usiminas Cubatão was shut down in 2015, the slab reheating furnace of the hot strip mill (LTQ2) started to use natural gas as dedicated fuel to heat the slabs. Changes in maintenance of the burners and also in the configuration of the combustion system were partially done in 2016, however it was necessary to carry out major maintenance in the fuel gas pipes, replace all control valves and replace partially the gas lances of the burners for natural gas. From July to November 2018 the engineering modifications were concluded and it was possible to achieve better operational results, especially reduction in primary scale formation and fuel consumption as reference to the historical LTQ2 performance.

 

SINCE THE BLAST FURNACE OF USIMINAS CUBATÃO WAS SHUT DOWN IN 2015, THE SLAB REHEATING FURNACE OF THE HOT STRIP MILL (LTQ2) STARTED TO USE NATURAL GAS AS DEDICATED FUEL TO HEAT THE SLABS. CHANGES IN MAINTENANCE OF THE BURNERS AND ALSO IN THE CONFIGURATION OF THE COMBUSTION SYSTEM WERE PARTIALLY DONE IN 2016, HOWEVER IT WAS NECESSARY TO CARRY OUT MAJOR MAINTENANCE IN THE FUEL GAS PIPES, REPLACE ALL CONTROL VALVES AND REPLACE PARTIALLY THE GAS LANCES OF THE BURNERS FOR NATURAL GAS. FROM JULY TO NOVEMBER 2018 THE ENGINEERING MODIFICATIONS WERE CONCLUDED AND IT WAS POSSIBLE TO ACHIEVE BETTER OPERATIONAL RESULTS, ESPECIALLY REDUCTION IN PRIMARY SCALE FORMATION AND FUEL CONSUMPTION AS REFERENCE TO THE HISTORICAL LTQ2 PERFORMANCE.
