Shows issues observed during Usiminas Cubatão’s Blast Furnace 1 rebuild and solutions found. After casting, a slight deformation was observed on the Large Bell. Due to the oval form, machinery work resulted in thickness reduction of the bell wall. There was also difficulty assembling the stone box and wear plates over the bell. As a result, to fit the deformed structure the boards were heated and further machinery made. Ultrasound measures and 3D scans indicated non conformity comparing to original drawings. Stress analysis through Finite Element Calculation was necessary to decide if the structure and the solutions found were adequate. In spite of the difference in the stress profile found and the one intended on design, maximum stress was not reached. The large bell was successfully delivered to Usiminas Cubatão.
