Resumo

O principal objetivo do trabalho é avaliar a intensidade da relação entre a concentração industrial de mercado na indústria de minério de ferro brasileira e os preços deste bem mineral. Antes de avaliarmos esta relação, descrevemos a evolução das principais empresas do setor desde a origem até o presente, demonstrando fatos econômicos e históricos importantes na formação do estágio elevado de concentração observado atualmente no setor. Usamos índices de concentração aplicados aos dados da produção nacional de minério de ferro, obtendo séries histórica de índices compreendidas entre os anos de 1981 à 2007. Estimamos modelos econométricos contendo o preço como variável resposta e a concentração industrial como variável regressora. Em seguida, analisamos a evolução da concentração na indústria do minério de ferro, identificando dois períodos onde este processo ocorreu de forma mais intensa (a saber, durante a década de 70 e a partir do ano 2000). Por último, validamos o nível de relacionamento entre a concentração industrial e os preços do minério de ferro.

 

The main goal of this work is to evaluate the intensity of the relation between the industrial market concentration verified in the Brazilian iron ore industry and the prices of this mineral. Before analyzing this relation we will describe the evolution of the main companies of this sector from the beginning to nowadays, relating economic and historical important facts in the determination of the iron ore’s concentration in the present period offered in Brazil. We use concentration contents applied to the values of the iron ore national production, obtaining historical series of the contents between the years of 1981 to 2007. We estimate econometrics models containing the price as a variable result and the industrial concentration as a variable regressed also. Followed by that, we analyzed the evolution of concentration in the iron ore industry, identifying two periods which this has occurred most intensely (during the 70’s and after 2000). Finally, we validate the relation between the industrial concentration measures and the prices of it, establishing their relation according to the two variables.
