The Sn-Cu alloys are considered promising alternatives for the replacement of solder alloys containing lead. The Sn-Cu alloys have low melting point and low manufacturing cost. However, little is known of the effects of cooling rate on the solidification microstructure of these alloys and the microstructure-strength relationships. In this study a transient directional solidification system was used, which is capable of providing assessment to microstructures produced from a wide spectrum of tip growth rates (VL). Tip cooling rates ( T ) were also experimentally determined along the Sn-2 wt% and 2.8 wt%Cu alloys castings lengths. Such processing parameters have been correlated with microstructural parameters measured along the castings, which were translated by the Cu6Sn5 inter-branch spacing (). The microstructural development was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy. The size and morphology of Cu6Sn5 particles have been investigated for both alloys. The Cu6Sn5 spacing varied from 16 m to 37 m and from 2 m to 12.5 m for the Sn-2 wt%Cu and Sn-2.8 wt%Cu alloys, respectively. Hall-Petch type relationships (HV = a+b (-1/2) have been proposed to represent Vickers microhardness against . The hardness values obtained for the Sn-2 wt%Cu alloy were higher than those found for the Sn- 2.8wt%Cu alloy.
