Tantalum is one of the most versatile metals in engineering, and can be used in applications such as space technology and biomedicine. This encourages the study of new technologies for obtaining the metal from tantalum oxide (Ta2O5). In this work a new route of obtaining metallic tantalum from the magnesiothermic reaction of the tantalum oxide is presented, using hydrogen plasma for ignition. It is proposed an alternative method to the Hunter process, which despite being the most used, is slow, inefficient for large scale production and generates waste extremely harmful to the environment. Magnesium (Mg) and Ta2O5 powders were mixed in a crucible that acts as hollow cathode, and then plasma heated to the ignition temperature. The experiments were carried out by varying the working pressure for the reduction of Ta2O5. The reduction products were analyzed by X-ray diffraction. The results show that it is possible to obtain metallic tantalum (Ta) from the metalothermic reduction of tantalum oxide (Ta2O5) using plasma of hydrogen as the ignition agent and magnesium as the reducing agent. The complete reduction of Ta2O5 is obtained with the use of pressures of 4,5 and 5,0 Torr.
