Resumo

The present study investigates the characteristics of sinter produced in a large-scale sinter machine with goethite based raw mix by analyzing the chemical, physical and mineralogical properties of sinter obtained from 20 different positions varying in height and width in a sinter pallet. The result revealed that the properties of sinter cake varied greatly in the height direction compared to those in the width direction. In the height direction, the yield of sinter in the surface layer (0~200 mm) was less than 68%, but immediately improved to be over 84% in the upper layer (200~400 mm) and did not change significantly till the bottom layer (~800 mm), while it was kept constant around 80% in the width direction. The porosity and FeO content of sinter reciprocally decreased and increased in the height direction owing to the heat flow, all of which affected the shatter index and reducibility of sinter. However, neither shatter index nor reducibility was attributed to calcium ferrite content without its detailed classification in size and shape. The horizontal segregation of granules in the sinter bed led to a difference of wind velocities between left and right sides, which in turn resulted in changes of porosity and reducibility of sinter in the width direction. This study could contribute to understanding of qualities of sinter cake in the actual sinter machine, and give some information about optimizing the operation conditions on using high level of pisolite iron ore.
