Resumo

Since the hot strip mill start up in 2012, the slab reheating furnace was challenged to operate in different conditions, especially the mixed gas composition to heat the slabs. Structural changes in the combustion system, control valves and gas lances of the burners has been made in 2018 to operate with natural gas as dedicated fuel, since the blast furnace of Usiminas Cubatão was shut down in 2015. In ten years of operation, good operational results were achieved like optimization of fuel gas consumption, reduction in primary scale formation and cleaner combustion with low impact of emission of pollutants (NOx, SOx and Dust) according targets of Brazilian environmental standards.
