Resumo

THE CONSTANT RESTRICTIONS DEFINED OVER THE YEARS BY THE COP HAVE BEEN FORCED THE SEARCH FOR NEW SOURCES OF ENERGY, MATERIALS AND FUELS. THE STEEL INDUSTRY IS SEEN AS A GREAT EMITTER, MAINLY OF CO2, DUE TO ITS HIGH CONSUMPTION OF FOSSIL FUELS, SUCH AS COAL. ABOUT 70% OF ALL STEEL PRODUCED IN THE WORLD COMES FROM BLAST FURNACE ROUTE, WHICH USES COKE AS MAIN REDUCER MATERIAL. COKE, A PRODUCT OF COAL DISTILLATION, IS OF GREAT IMPORTANCE IN THE BLAST FURNACE, HAVING A CHEMICAL, PHYSICAL AND ENERGETIC FUNCTION. DUE TO THE FACT THAT COAL, A FOSSIL RAW MATERIAL FROM A NON-RENEWABLE SOURCE, IS THE MAIN INPUT, COKE BECOMING AN ENVIRONMENTALLY NON-VIABLE OPTION. ON THE OTHER HAND, BIOMASS IS CONSIDERED BY THE WORD STEEL ASSOCIATION AS NEUTRAL IN TERMS OF CO2 EMISSIONS AND HAS BEEN REINFORCED AS AN INTERESTING SHORT-TERM OPTION FOR THE PARTIAL REPLACEMENT OF COAL IN THE STEEL INDUSTRY. THE FACT IS THAT RAW BIOMASS HAS A HIGH VOLATILE CONTENT SO THAT ITS FIXED CARBON CONTENT IS LOWER, LIMITING ITS USE. THUS, THIS WORK AIMS TO SHOW SOME WORKS THAT USE BIOMASS TO REPLACE PART OF COAL IN COKEMAKING, SHOWING ALTERNATIVES TO IMPROVE IT PARTICIPATION IN COKE PRODUCTION. THE WORK THAT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED IN PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN GERDAU AND FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF OURO PRETO FOR BIOCOAL PRODUCTION, FROM AGRIBUSINESS WASTE PYROLYSIS, WILL BE HIGHLIGHTED. IT WILL BE POSSIBLE TO SEE THAT BIOMASS CAN BE A VIABLE SHORT-TERM ALTERNATIVE FOR REDUCING CO2 EMISSIONS.
