PRELIMINARY STUDY ON GAS-BASED DIRECT REDUCTION IRON MAKING BY COKE OVEN GAS

Resumo

Coke oven gas (COG for short) is the by-product of coking process. And used in metallurgy and boiler and other areas in China. But COG doesn’t used widely in gas-based direct reduction area. The main reasons including low Chinese direct reduction output and compositions of COG. The main compositions of coke oven gas are hydrogen and methane. And B.T.X. (Benzene, Toluene, Xylene) and S and naphthalene and coke tar are also contained which may harmful for direct reduction equipments and process. The quality of direct reduction iron (DRI for short) and even steelmaking process followed can be affected too. The possibility of using COG in gas-based direct reduction area is analyzed in this paper based on literatures and theory. As results show that (1) B.T.X. and naphthalene and coke tar and so on can be removed based on mini-test in literature. But the industrial grade COG direct reduction process doesn’t appeared until now. So the effect needs to be inspected; (2) S can be reduced to 20 mg/m3, and is ok for direct reduction; and (3) the adjustment and necessary addition must be done in a combination steel plant to make sure that other process is normal.
