The behavior of coke at the tuyere level of the blast furnace is still not well understood at present. Different reactions of coke in the blast furnace affect its dissolution ability in hot metal. Experiments at the laboratory scale have been performed to distinguish between the various influences. The different reactions of coke with hot metal are discussed, as well as its reactions with slags. An emphasis of the work is the influence of alkalis on these reactions.
