The cleanness of steels and reducing problems of castability in steel mills have been subject to constant efforts of steelmakers. Good understanding of the process effects and their respective peculiarities ensures reduction in the occurrence of inclusions and castability problems. The most critical SBQ steels with higher incidence of inclusions and castability problems are steels with low Si and Al killed steels with S content. Among the analysis parameters, the order of alloys addition, casting temperature setting and thermal and chemical stability are the most influential in the amount of inclusions and castability problems. For low Si steels, pre - deoxidation with Al, aided by higher temperatures, confer liquid inclusions early in the process promoting greater removal of these. Likewise, steels with Al and S are benefited by the higher temperature but remarkably sensitive to problems of thermal stratification, and this sensibility increase with the S and Al contents. Thus, the waiting time and the thermal state of the laddle and tundish become an important factor in reducing thermal stratification and problems with inclusions and castability.
