Present work investigated the abrasive and adhesive wear resistances and wear mechanisms of tool steels carried out by automated pin-on-disk equipment which pin were 9 different types of tool steels. In the abrasive testing, the counter-face was a silicon carbide milling disk, however, in the adhesive testing the disk was a SAE 1008 electric steel sheet. Normal load of 5N were used in the abrasive testing and 29,5N in the adhesive testing, and the same other conditions of sliding velocity of 0,45m/s, total sliding distance of 3000m, controlled temperature and humidity of 25 oC and 50 to 60% respectively. The wear rate was calculated by the Archard´s equation. Tooling for metal cutting and forming employed without lubrication in these processes fails due to these two types of wear. It is common to relate wear resistance to material hardness only. However, there are other variables that also influence the wear such as: fracture toughness, type of crystalline microstructure and the occurrence of hard precipitate in the metallic matrix and also the nature of them. By the present investigation, the acting wear mechanisms were analyzed and by normalized testing, the wear resistance of nine different tool steel were evaluated. A comparison rank of wear resistance were made among the usual steel obtained by conventional metallurgy such as AISI H13 and AISI A2 in relation to tool steel fabricated by powder metallurgy sintering process such as Crucible CPM 3V, CPM 9V e CPM M4. Metallographic analysis of microstructure of pin and Vickers microhardness were performed in the specimens. It is concluded with the presentation of comparative classification or rank of the different tool steels in relation to the wear resistance and cost-benefice of each tool steels. The best wear resistance performance was the CPM 9V tool steel and the worst was the AISI H13.
