SELECTION CRITERIA FOR TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE AGGLOMERATION OF IRON ORES

Resumo

The paper gives a technical overview on sintering and pelletising as the two most important agglomeration methods for iron ores nowadays. For both technologies a typical investment and operating cost estimate is given and discussed. The selection of the adequate agglomeration technology depends on a number of factors, including iron ore properties, product quality requirements, infrastructure prerequisites, environmental limits for plant operation and additional requirements to the agglomeration plant, such as the recycling of in-plant waste materials. Also in the future, both technologies will be applied for the agglomeration of iron ores, with sintering facing the biggest challenges in regard to its capabilities to meet future emission limits and to cope with deteriorating raw material properties.
