In the rolling plate the steel is submitted to thermomechanical processes which aim to obtain surface qualities, shape, dimensions and mechanical properties compatible with the requirements of its application. A process increasingly used to obtain these characteristics is accelerated cooling through the water application after the hot rolling. When the cooling does not occur in a homogeneous manner, undesirable characteristics are generated in the plates, such as residual stresses and distortions, characterized by the shape defects. Such characteristics are reasons for scrapping or for rework that lead to increased lead time and production costs. The use of computational simulations to model and predict the occurrence of these defects is intensely used in academia and industry allowing improve the control of process variables, product performance and reduces costs and rework. The objective of this work was to numerically simulate the accelerated cooling process in heavy plates and their consequent distortions and residual stresses evaluating the influence of the non-homogeneous cooling rate on the two faces of the plate. For this, the Finite Element Method was used to perform 2D simulations. In this study, the influence of the phase transformations was not evaluated and the steel used was the AISI 1015 standard available from the DEFORMTM Software library version 10.0. The results showed a strong influence of non-uniform accelerated cooling on the generation of residual stresses and plate distortions.
