Resumo

A Votorantim Metais possui uma usina de zinco em Juiz de Fora, que produz cerca de 92 mil t Zn/ano, utilizando o processo hidrometalúrgico convencional. Os resíduos gerados no processo (principalmente a jarosita) são depositados em barragens, implicando na necessidade de ocupação de grandes áreas, demandando investimentos vultosos além de rigorosos controles ambientais e de segurança, com exigências crescentes. No processo industrial são gerados expressivos volumes de efluentes líquidos, cujo tratamento é realizado por meio de neutralização e precipitação dos hidróxidos metálicos, sendo o lodo do tratamento também destinado às barragens de rejeitos. O objetivo deste trabalho é descrever, em linhas gerais, a gestão ambiental dos resíduos sólidos e efluentes líquidos bem como as melhorias previstas com os novos projetos. Foram analisadas as perspectivas de redução dos resíduos e efluentes gerados sob o ponto de vista do desenvolvimento sustentável, de modo a manter a competitividade da empresa.

 

Votorantim Metais owns a zinc metallurgical plant, located in Juiz de Fora, MG, Brazil, which produces about 92 kt Zn/year, employing the conventional hydrometallurgical process. The solid wastes generated throughout the process (mainly jarosite), have been deposited inside tailing dams, demanding the occupation of extensive areas, big investments and hard and strict environmental controls. In the industrial process expressive volumes of liquid effluents are generated, which treatment consists of neutralization and precipitation of metallic hydroxides, generating sludge, which is also deposited into the solid waste pond. This paper aims at presenting a general description of the practices related to the environmental management of solid and liquid wastes and the expected improvements associated with the new projects as well. The solid residues and liquid effluents reduction perspectives were analyzed under the point of view of sustainable development to keep level of competitiveness of the company in the market.
