The Slab Continuous Casting Machine of SIDERAR began to operate in October of 1984 with a nominal capacity by design of 800,000 Tn/year. From 1993 its production capacity was increased up to 2.800.000 Tn/year. It is important to emphasize that all the production of SIDERAR is processed by this installation because from 1992 we deactivate the Billet Continuous Casting machine, staying this only one equipment to process all the steel of the company. The ladle turret is the equipment in charge to position the ladle on the tundish to maintain the supply of liquid steel to CCM. The most critical components of the ladle turret is a bearing of 4400mm of diameter, the one that allows the turn of the arms, and two bronze bushings of 50x300x3000mm of diameter that allow a vertical movement using a hydraulic cylinder. During the year 1995 we ask to the designer of the equipment develops a method of integral repair, basically for the replacement of the bearing and bushes. The presented proposal consisted of a program of 14 days and as a main tool it used a hanger of 15000mm of length, 6000mm of wide and 50 Tn of weight. The same one is lifted using two traveling cranes (one of the cargo side and the other of the services side). The repair was delayed due to the high reparation time. During Jun/1999, and due to the elevated wear shown by the bushes, we decided to change the upper bush which was done in 2.5 days. The used tool was fundamentally a synchronous hydraulic power station and supports of different dimensions. Because of the design that presents the equipment is not possible the change the lower bush. It is remarkable that for this date the bearing counted approximately with 1400hs of use, being the limit life, considered by the supplier, of about 1000hs. Again SIDERAR asked to the supplier a new method to shorten the repair times. A new alternative (equipment totally different from the constructed one) of 8 days was designed. At the same time technical staffs of SIDERAR develop a method with the toolbox constructed in 1995 and 1999, with a considered time of repair of about 5 days. The same one was presented to the supplier for its consideration which was totally approved. This work shows the method developed and the success in the execution of the replacement of the bearing and bushes of the ladle turret of SIDERAR done in Ene/2007. It is important to emphasize that for the replacement we constructed a new outer column, which counts with improvements that allow the replacement of the bushings in short programmed shutdowns of 24hs. Also, and with the acquired experience, it is possible to replace the bearing in approximately 60/72hs.
