The friction and wear behaviour of a novel low-temperature duplex surface treatment has been examined under sliding contact with heated aluminium. The CrN-rich surface layer formed by this process exhibited low and stable coefficient of friction relative to untreated tool steel and other low temperature surface modification processes. Additionally the ability of the surface treatment to reform in isolated wear areas was demonstrated. Importantly reprocessing did not affect the microstructure or composition of the surrounding unworn regions.
