FAILURE ANALYSIS OF A ROTATING SHAFT OF HORIZONTAL CENTRIFUGAL PUMP USED IN STEEL MAKING INDUSTRY

Resumo

O eixo rotativo de uma bomba horizontal centrífuga fraturou completamente após cerca de 1.500 horas em serviço operando em uma frequência de 4.000 rpm. O equipamento bombeava água industrial em uma siderúrgica, sendo o componente manufaturado por forjamento de aço inoxidável duplex austenítico-ferrítico 1.4462 (UNS S31803). A investigação da causa da falha da peça envolveu inspeção visual, análise química, metalográfica e fractográfica, assim como ensaios de dureza. Concluiu-se que o eixo falhou segundo o mecanismo de fadiga, com o sítio de nucleação da trinca localizado na camada de cromo que revestia o componente, tendo sido originado pelo processo de frete entre o eixo e o correspondente disco de apoio.

 

The horizontal rotating shaft of a centrifugal pump fractured completely after 1,500 hours in service, operating at the frequency of 4,000 rpm. The equipment pumped water in a steel making industry, with the ruptured component manufactured by forging 1.4462 duplex austenitic-ferritic steel (UNS S31803). The failure investigation comprised visual inspection, chemical, metallographic and fractographic analyses, as well as hardness measurement. It has been concluded that the axle failed according to fatigue mechanism, with the crack nucleation site located at the chromium coating layer and originated by fretting between the piece and the corresponding bearing disc.
