In sliding wear tests of steels, transitions happen between the moderate and severe wear regimes as a function of the normal load, sliding speed, humidity, temperature, between other factors. Dimensional wear coefficients range, in average, between 10-5 mm³/N.m and 10-3 mm³/N.m, depending on the tribosystem. In this work, the influence of the normal load in the way the AISI 1020 and AISI 4340 steel wears was evaluated, using a pin-on-disc configuration, without lubrification and at ambient temperature. The pin materials were AISI 1020 and 4340 steel, meanwhile the discs material was AISI 1020 steel. The sample’s characterization was done before and after the essays, through the use of a stereo microscope, a three-dimensional surface analyzer and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Measurement of hardness and mass loss were also performed. In addition, the friction coefficient versus time behavior was investigated, with identification of a running-in regime for the studied cases. The AISI 1020 pins worn more than the AISI 4340 pins and, in both studied pairs, it was observed a moderate-severe wear regime transition with the increase of normal load.
