To improve their economic performances and their competitiveness, one of the objectives of Usinor ironmaking plants has been for a long time to decrease the coke consumption in the blast furnaces. For more than ten years, we have been working on two complementary ways to reach this target: reduction in the overall consumption of reducing agents and an increase in the quantity of coal injected into the blast furnaces. The different improvements concern grinding and injection facilities as well as blast furnace operation control. This text mainly uses the historical data of French blast furnaces of Usinor.
