Resumo

Many analytical techniques are applied to produce sensors and transducers suitable for pure gas measurements in the industrial gases industry, ranging from “traditional” approaches to new and advanced techniques of high complexity. From the user’s point of view, however, the key requirements are for reliability, high measurement performance, and competitive costs. The established techniques include: paramagnetic measurement for oxygen concentrations; infrared techniques for many other gases such as carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide; both electrochemical cells and high temperature zirconia sensors for oxygen measurements at trace levels. Each of these techniques has been continuously improved to ensure high performance, stability, and progressive miniaturisation of design to progress the required development of more cost-effective, more reliable and higher performing gas analysers for the manufacturers and users of high purity industrial gases. This paper presents some of these latest advances in the design and construction of such sensors, and their incorporation into state-of-the-art gas analysers specifically designed for the industry.
