Resumo

China produces 1.2 million tons of aluminum in 1993 with an average yearly increasing rate of 10.4% in last ten years to meet its rapidly increasing consumption needs. The industry is mainly based on domestic high silica diasporic bauxite. Unique extraction technologies have been developed by ourselves to overcome the difficulties. Smelting technology is undergoing changes trying to catch up with progress in the world. Efforts to expand the ingot production will continue in the second half of 1990s. The existence of many small reduction lines is another uniqueness. In fabrication, extrusion, rolling and forging facilities can mostly meet the current needs but still require adjustment to be able to produce a variety of downstream products. The market is no longer closed but almost internationalized. This article gives a picture of the past, present and future of Chinese aluminum industry.
