In the past, the automation of technological processes was mainly based on mathematical models. And this was sufficient, as long as the process itself could be described by clearly-defined algorithms. But with growing process complexity, it has become necessary to pursue new approaches. Fuzzy Logic and Neural Networks have gained importance in process automation, supported by the enormous increase in computing power over the last few years. Siemens started early in developing a number of different applications based on highly-sophisticated AI software. An essential step toward industrial applications was the improvement of the neural network's capability for online adaptation, and the combination of neural networks with existing algorithmic models. Meanwhile, many systems for steel plant and rolling mill automation have been proven successful in operation. The paper describes typical applications in the field of electric steel plants and hot rolling mills. Results will be discussed, and the conclusion provides an outlook into the future of artificial intelligence for industrial control and automation applications.
