In 1967, jointly with the startup of the new LD-AC converters, ARBED decided to fit out its steel works with process control computers. The first functions installed were data logging and data storage, heat calculation, technical management and supervision of the production tools. The final goal was a fully automatic computer control of the steelmaking process. This step required the development of specific sensors, the most important one being the CONI-. Thanks to these developments, computer-based closed-loop controlling of the refining process was installed in the steel works of ESCH-BELVAL and DIFFERDANGE in 1977. In 1980, the automatic control was extended in order to support the LBE process. Till now about twenty-five LBE converters have been or are to be equipped worldwide with this system.
