The present study aimed to evaluate the surface and microstructural integrity of an AISI 1020 steel welded joint produced by the MIG/MAG process. Carbon steel plates were welded using AWS ER70S-6 filler wire and pure CO₂ shielding gas. The welded joint was characterized through non-destructive liquid penetrant testing, metallographic analysis by optical microscopy, and Vickers microhardness testing. The liquid penetrant test results revealed the presence of surface discontinuities, such as cracks, undercuts, spatter, and lack of penetration, associated with arc instability and the welding parameters employed. The microstructural analysis showed that the base metal exhibited the typical ferritic-pearlitic microstructure of AISI 1020 steel, while the heat-affected zone presented partial grain growth. In the fusion zone, microstructural refinement and the formation of acicular ferrite were observed, contributing to the increase in hardness. The microhardness results indicated higher values in the fusion zone, demonstrating the direct influence of microstructural transformations on the mechanical properties of the welded joint.
