The ladle shell temperature is one of the predominant factors affecting both the refractory lining and the structural integrity of steel ladles in steelmaking plants. In order to improve the performance of these variables, structural ceramic fiber boards were installed at the interface between the ladle shell and the permanent lining in a steel ladle at Usiminas, with the objective of reducing shell temperature and enhancing operational safety. Measurements were carried out using infrared thermography throughout a full ladle campaign, comparing standard ladles with one ladle assembled using structural ceramic fiber boards as thermal insulation. The results demonstrate shell temperature reductions ranging from 82 to 94 °C at the slag line, 50 to 59 °C at the metal line, and 44 to 88 °C at the ladle bottom. The reduction in heat flux to the ladle shell confirms the effectiveness of the insulation, indicating potential improvements in thermal stability, reduced energy demand during secondary refining, and lower thermal losses.
