This study aimed to perform a microstructural characterization and microhardness evaluation of a welded joint in SAE 1020 steel obtained by the MAG welding process. The samples were welded in a butt joint configuration using ER70S‑6 filler wire, CO₂ shielding gas, a voltage of 17 V, and a wire feed speed of 6 m/min, without post-weld heat treatment. The characterization included liquid penetrant testing, metallographic analysis, and Vickers microhardness testing. The results revealed a ferrite–pearlite microstructure in the base metal and the formation of acicular ferrite and Widmanstätten ferrite in the heat-affected zone and fusion zone. The average microhardness values were around 152 HV, with higher values in the right heat-affected zone (175 HV) and a significant reduction in sample 2, reaching 105 HV in the HAZ and 97 HV in the fusion zone, associated with higher heat input and lower cooling rates resulting from the welding conditions..
