This study aimed to perform the microstructural and mechanical characterization of SAE 1020 low-carbon steel joints welded using the MAG (Metal Active Gas) process. The plates were joined using AWS ER70S-6 filler metal and pure CO₂ shielding gas. The samples underwent conventional metallographic preparation and chemical etching with 2% Nital for analysis via optical microscopy. The results revealed a microstructural gradient consisting of a ferritic-pearlitic matrix in the Base Metal (BM), regions of grain refinement and grain growth in the Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ), and a Fusion Zone (FZ) with dendritic morphology, columnar grains, and the presence of acicular ferrite. The Vickers microhardness profile (HV1) confirmed the observed changes, showing increasing values from the BM (approx. 149 HV) to the peak hardness recorded in the FZ (average of 193 HV and maximum of 203 HV). Local variations in hardness profiles were attributed to oscillations inherent to the manual welding process, such as fluctuations in heat input and travel speed. It was concluded that the introduction of alloying elements by the filler metal and the imposed thermal cycle were determining factors for the increase in local hardness, validating the characterization methodology for the evaluation of the structural performance of welded joints.
