Resumo

This work presents the results of a study on the suitability of waterworks waste bearing ceramic bodies for application in red ceramic products for civil construction. The waste (sludge) is a by-product of the waterworks from Campos dos Goytacazes-RJ city, Brazil. Clayey masses containing a kaolinitic clay and up to 10 wt.% waste were prepared. The characteristics of the raw materials used regarding chemical composition, particle size analysis, specific mass, and plasticity were determined. Rectangular ceramic bodies were obtained by uniaxial pressing at 24 MPa and fired in air at 950 ºC. The following properties after firing were determined: linear shrinkage, water absorption, apparent density, and flexural strength. The results revealed that the waterworks waste from Campos dos Goytacazes-RJ region is a plastic material, which can be used as component of clayey ceramic formulations for manufacturing of red ceramic.
