Sm2Fe17N3 based magnets are produced by a gas-solid reaction of the base alloy (Sm2Fe17) in a nitrogen atmosphere. In the present work, the production of this alloy by reduction diffusion is studied. It was found that it’s possible to obtain Sm2Fe17 by this process, but the temperature is critical concerning the evaporation of samarium, which is significant at high temperatures. The alloy obtained has a particle size close that of the initial transition metal, which makes this method suitable for the production of fine powders.
