Resumo

Computational Mechanics models are used at SIDERAR as an engineering tool for understanding and optimizing the manufacturing processes and also for providing technological insight into the forming operations that are carried out by the steel plate end users. As demonstrative examples of different applications where computational simulations are used for analyzing SIDERAR production processes, finite element models of the liquid steel flow in a continuous casting submerged entry nozzle (SEN) and of the deformation process in the hot rolling line are developed. For illustrating the application of computational models to the analysis of sheet forming processes a simulation of the Erichsen test is also presented. Normally the simulation of industrial processes are based on complicated nonlinear models, therefore in order to obtain reliable results it is necessary that reliable computational formulations are used by qualified engineers and scientists with a deep understanding of the processes basic physics and of the Computational Mechanics methods. At SIDERAR the numerical models are used as an analytical engineering tool for aiding the process and product engineers; hence, the permanent interaction between SIDERAR engineers and the Computational Mechanics group is without any doubt the key aspect for a successful team work.
