Resumo

It is well known that the carburizing process is usually controlled by the solute diffusion mechanism in the solid alloy. It is also recognized that predicting out the carburizing profiles in steel is as well useful for control and optimization of this process. In order to predict the carbon concentration profiles in steel during carburizing, the diffusion equation has been solved by numerical methods. Assuming a diffusion coefficient dependent on temperature and carbon content, the explicit, implicit and Crank-Nicolson finite difference methods have been implemented. These schemes are contrasted on the basis of the accuracy of their predictions. Thus, the simulator can predict the desired profiles as a function of the thermal and carburizing cycles applied to the steel surface. Through validation of the simulator, it was found that the predictions agree quite well with the experimental data, under several operating conditions. This simulator can easily be modified to simulate alternative carburizing cycles. Thus, the prediction of any diffusional processes in solid materials is as well possible.
