Resumo

The service properties of nitrided or nitrocarburized parts are determined by numerous process parameters. The influence of composition and size of the batch, material type and its surface condition, operating condition of the furnace, and partial pressures of the process gases are often neglected. Thus, the technological properties of treated parts can vary widely. Unexpected failure of components — with expensive secondary damage — is possible. These problems can be reduced enormously by controlling and sensoring the nitriding/nitrocarburizing process. Nevertheless, in industry it is not generally usual to control these processes. Often processing is done by experience, sometimes even without any measurement of process data such as flow rates or atmosphere composition. Therefore, in this paper different methods and their advantages for controlling the nitriding process are shown.
