Resumo

The effects of cooling rates of 10 and 550 °C/min were investigated in a 7% chromium and 0.6% Si alloy family with carbon contents between 2.2 and 4.1%. The studies were performed in shell moulded samples (550 °C/min) and differential thermo analysis samples (10 °C/min) using both light and electron microscopy. At 550 °C/min it was observed that the %C₃ carbides were totally replaced by M₃C as the carbon content exceeded 2.4%. Reducing the cooling rate to 10 °C/min resulted in M₃C₃ carbides replacement by M₃C only at 4.1% carbon. It was observed that when both %C₃–M₃C carbides are formed, some of M₃C inherit the primary or eutectic M₃C₃ morphology. It is proposed that a schema using the temperature interval between the γ + M₃C₃ eutectic temperature and the quasi-peritectic L + M₃C₃ = γ + M₃C temperatures can be used to rationalise the effect of cooling rate on the carbide nature.
